Virtual Pipeline

1,200 kg H₂ per swapGreen hydrogen at 350 bar, delivered by road

Hydrogen delivery without a pipeline. Swappable high-pressure units arrive full, feed your fuel cells, and are exchanged for fresh ones when depleted, remotely monitored the whole way.

Contain, transport, deliver

Reliable hydrogen supply, anytime, anywhere.

A fuel cell is only as dependable as the hydrogen behind it. The Virtual Pipeline makes that supply a delivery service instead of a construction project.

No trenching, no right-of-way, minimal infrastructure. A trailer arrives full, and full trailers keep coming.

The swap cycle.

Every unit reports its level remotely. When the one on site runs low, a full unit takes its place: propane exchange, at industrial scale.

The energy math

One swap, in numbers you can plan around.

Delivered energy depends on your fuel cells' load profile, so we plan the swap schedule around your actual demand. When one unit isn't enough, the arithmetic scales unit by unit.

Dispatchable clean energy

One unit is a supply.

Virtual Pipeline units are used in multiples to deliver much larger amounts of hydrogen as required. Capacity grows by adding units, not by re-engineering the site.

A fleet is a pipeline.

Remote monitoring watches every unit's levels, so swaps are dispatched before your supply runs low, not after.

Where it works

Supply that follows the work.

Facilities waiting on infrastructure

Hydrogen on site now, by road, while permanent supply is still years out. Quick to deploy and easy to set up.

Remote desert base camps

Base camps deep in the Nevada and California desert, with no grid in reach, fueled by swap.

Feeding MEC‑H and EmPower fuel cell systems

On site, the unit connects and feeds your fuel cell systems, then is exchanged for a full one when depleted.

Multi-unit supply for larger demand

Units combine in multiples to deliver much larger amounts of hydrogen. Capacity grows by adding units, not by re-engineering the site.

The field record

The system that fuels our own desert operations.

Before we ask a customer to trust the Virtual Pipeline, we stake our own operations on it, delivering green hydrogen to remote Rebelle Rally base camps alongside partners including Plug Power.

5 seasons

Virtual Pipeline units have fueled RI's grid-free power and EV-charging operations across five Rebelle Rally seasons: base camps spread across a 2,500 km route, with no grid in reach.

2023

The rally's base camps switch off diesel generators entirely and run on hydrogen, with the Virtual Pipeline delivering the green fuel behind the changeover.

2025

The Virtual Pipeline supplies part of a near-1 MW hybrid solar-and-hydrogen microgrid at the tenth-annual rally: utility-scale power, assembled in the middle of the desert and fueled by swap.

The vessel technology

Built with Quantum Fuel Systems.

The Virtual Pipeline rides on high-pressure Type 4 vessel technology from Quantum Fuel Systems, RI's partner since April 2022. Quantum built the world's first 5,000 psi hydrogen system on a commercial vehicle in 1999 and the first internationally certified 10,000 psi hydrogen tank: more than two decades of high-pressure hydrogen experience, packaged by RI into a swappable delivery unit.

“Renewable Innovations is known for bold thinking and making an impact. They have moved beyond imagining what a green clean future powered by hydrogen looks like and are building it today.”
